August 3 -- "Words and Music "

Speaker: George Powell, Member of UUCWV and Director of Music, UUCWV. George notes that the topic is: "A Spiritual Journey through Poetry and Song from Nursery Rhymes to Mountains."

August 10 -- Topic To Be Announced

Speaker: Rabbi Larry Kaplan, Rabbi, Temple Israel, Wilkes-Barre, PA.

August 17 -- "Welcoming the Stranger "

Speaker: The Rev. Dr. Stan Sears, Minister, UUCWV. Rev. Sears notes: "Mary Pipher is a Unitarian Universalist psychologist in Lincoln, NE. Most famous for Reviving Ophelia, her most recent work focuses on immigrants from some of the world's 'hot spots' settling in Lincoln. Pipher's work comes to mind because this is the time of year when new people are visiting and 'trying us out.' How we welcome people into our nation, as well as our congregation, says much about who we are. I invite you to think back to your own initial visits to UUCWV, or wherever you first became a UU."

There will be a Pot-Luck Luncheon after worship.

August 24 -- "Poetic Principles: Poems that Reflect the UU Principles "

Speaker: Jennifer Hill Kaucher, Member of UUCWV and the author of four books of poetry: Questioning Walls Open; Nightcrown; Book of Days; and A Proper Dress. A Pennsylvania Council on the Arts roster poet, Jennifer conducts poetry workshops and residencies throughout the state. She is co-owner and editor of Paper Kite Press. Jennifer notes: "While reading Song of Myself resently, Walt Whitman whispered from under my bootsoles--'the inherent dignity and worth of each person.' Marilyn Nelson's poem, Minor Miracle, shows the 'power of love to overcome hatred.' I'll share some of the poems I have found whose words and ideas reflect the Unitarian Universalist principles, why we need poetry's power to show us big abstractions in a fresh way, and the tradition and role of poetry in the Unitarian Universalist Church and in our individual lives."
